On May 22, 2017, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors voted in favor (6-1) of conveying 9.25 acres of land formerly owned by AEP located north of Nik Ryan Drive in Blacksburg, to the Town of Blacksburg for recreational use.
The deed to the land, commonly referred to as “The Meadow,” was officially signed by Christopher Tuck, District B, Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Chair, and the Honorable Ron Rordam, Mayor of Blacksburg, Va., at a special event on Sunday September 10, 2017.
The event was held in honor of long-time Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Member, Annette Perkins, District A. A plaque was placed at the newly dedicated park in her honor that reads: "'The Meadow' Dedicated to Annette S. Perkins, Montgomery Board of Supervisors, 1998 – 2017. In recognition of her efforts to preserve this land as a park for future generations to enjoy."
"Supervisor Perkins has been instrumental in making sure that the land we call ‘The Meadow’ remained a recreation space for the citizens in Montgomery County to enjoy," said Chair Tuck.
"She was diligent over the years in sharing the concerns and opinions of her constituents who frequented the land with the Board, playing a big role in making sure it was preserved as a park."
In her remarks at the dedication event, Supervisors Perkins quoted Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
"This particular piece of land, 'The Meadow,' is a great example of how a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens banding together and staying the course can bring about change," said Perkins.
