Our Active Adults and Senior programming is a combination effort with Montgomery CountyChristiansburgBlacksburg, and Radford Parks and Recreation departments, Montgomery County RSVPMeadowbrook Library, and the Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together) Council.

Enjoy programs catering to adults ages 50+, including arts and crafts, games, music, special presentations, picnics, socials, and more. See what's out there by signing up for our many trips and tours. We offer a wealth of activities to encourage life enrichment through engagement in social and physical activity, while taking a trip off the beaten path!

    Late Summer/Fall 2021 Activities

    Chicken of the Woods Mushroom Hunt - $7

    Tu, Aug. 31, 1:00 p.m., Location: Participants to be called week of event

    Southwest Virginia mushroom hunting season does not have to strictly be confined to the spring months looking for morels. The late summer and fall months are an ideal time to find chicken of the woods mushrooms. Never heard of them? These mushrooms are so named because "they taste like chicken"! The deadline to register is August 24.

     

    Coffee & Tea Social - Free

    Tuesdays - Sept. 7, Sept. 21

    10 a.m. - 11 a.m., Great Road Coffee - 100 W Main Street, Christiansburg

    From the farm to your cup - responsible, all natural, and fresh! Join us for a safe, physically distanced coffee and tea social hour! Great Road Coffee has plenty of room to physically distance while hanging out with friends. Each participant is responsible for their drink and food cost. The deadline to register is the day prior to each event.

     

    Claytor Lake Kayak Trip - $30

    W, Sept. 8, 9:00 a.m., Claytor Lake

    We provide full instruction on how to navigate your own sit-on-top kayak in a safe environment on calm clear water. Lunch is provided. Transportation is on your own. The deadline to register is September 1.

    Grandparents Day Craft - Free

    Wed, Sept. 8, 11:00 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center

    Celebrate grandparent's day with your grandchild(ren), ages 3-5. You will create a kite to enjoy outdoors or indoors. The deadline to register is September 1.

     

    Virtual Trip Series: Destination #5 - Free

    F, Sept. 10, 12:30 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Multipurpose Room #2

    Leave your bags at home and join us for the virtual trip series! Participants will receive a "passport" that we will stamp for each destination. Prizes will be awarded in December 2021. Lunch is provided by Commonwealth Senior Living - Christiansburg Campus. The deadline to register is September 3.

     

    Mystery Movies and Munchies - Free

    Join us for a mystery movie and refreshments! Register by the Monday prior to each movie. 

     

    Bringing the Barter to You Series: Peter Pan - $15

    Watch as the Barter Theatre brings classic stories to life on the virtual stage! The deadline to register is September 8. 

     

    Breakfast & Brunch Club

    We will meet at a variety of locations in the area for breakfast, brunch, or lunch! Participants are responsible for their drink and food cost. The deadline to register is the Monday prior to the event.

    Tie Dye Series - $10 each

    If you would like to learn the basics of tie-dying, this is the craft for you! The fee includes all supplies, except for the "Bring Your Own" session. Register by the deadlines stated below.

    Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T.

    The Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together) Council works on various projects to benefit senior citizens in the community. The council meets every third Tuesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Recreation Center unless specified otherwise. Meetings are open to all senior citizens to attend. Registration deadlines are one week prior to the event.     Cornhole & Horseshoe Tournament - $10

    W, Sept. 22, 11:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park, Christiansburg

    Join us for a friendly cornhole and horseshoe tournament! Lunch is included. The deadline to register is September 15.   

     

    High Bridge Trail Hike - $15

    Th, Sept. 23, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Farmville, VA

    High Bridge Trail is 31 miles long and ideally suited for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Once a rail bed, this trail is wide, level, and generally flat. Its finely crushed limestone surface and dimensions make it easy to enjoy. The park's centerpiece is the majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 125 feet above the Appomattox River. It is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the United States. High Bridge is a Virginia Historic Landmark, and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail is a National Recreation Trail recognizing exemplary trails of local and regional significance, connecting people to nature and to our shared history and culture. Lunch is on your own at The Fishin' Pig, a Memphis style BBQ joint. This hike is Level I, and we will cover approximately two miles. The deadline to register is September 16. 

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 8:30 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m.

     

    Cruising on the Pontoon - $47

    Su, Sept. 26, 10:00 a.m., Claytor Lake

    There's no better way to spend the day than with lunch and a relaxing cruise on the calm waters of Claytor Lake. We'll be traveling in style on an 18-foot party pontoon with reclining chairs, diving board, and water slide. We'll provide hotdogs on the grill, a side, and drinks. This is a great opportunity for wildlife photography, or you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Claytor Lake. The deadline to register is September 22.

     

    Gnome Welcome Sign - $55

    Tu, Sept. 28, 1:00 p.m., Wine & Design - 438 Peppers Ferry Rd NW, Christiansburg

    Create a hand-painted welcome sign featuring a cute gnome with interchangeable decorations! Fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is August 30.

     

    It’s Never Too Late to Learn to Watercolor - $68 (Fee includes all six classes)

    Wednesdays – Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27, Nov. 3

    9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Senior Activities Room

    Make beautiful watercolor artwork in this six-part class series taught by local artist Harriet Anderson. You will learn basic techniques in the beginning and build upon your skills with a new composition each week. Participants will pay the $60 fee to the instructor at the first class, and an additional $8 to the Christiansburg Recreation Center. The deadline to register is September 15.

     

    Medicare Part D - Free

    F, Oct. 1, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Montgomery County Government Center, Multipurpose Room #1

    What’s new? When can I enroll or change my plan? These and other important questions and information on plan changes and deadlines will be presented by Deena Flinchum, VICAP Counselor with NRV Agency on Aging. Deena will discuss ways to get coverage, learn what the drug plan covers, the types of costs you’ll pay in a Medicare drug plan, and how Part D works with other insurance. Don’t miss out on this important yearly update on Medicare Part D. Light refreshments will be served. The deadline to register is September 20.

     

    Step-by-Step Canvas Painting: Fall - $17 per session

    Session 1 – Oct. 5         Session 2 – Oct. 12

    1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Mid County Activity Center

    Join instructor Beverly Bridges to paint a fall scene on canvas. She provides clear instructions every step of the way, so even if you are a beginner this class is for you! The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register for Session 1 is October 1. The deadline to register for Session 2 is October 5.

     

    Autumn Leaves Festival - $15

    F, Oct. 8, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Mt. Airy, NC

    Every year in October, the Town of Mayberry hosts their historic Autumn Leaves Festival in the heart of Mount Airy, North Carolina. This unique event is nationally recognized, and offers a mix of talented musicians, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, and delicious food vendors. There is truly something for everyone! Tourists from across the country and locals alike come out to enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown Mayberry. Lunch is on your own. The deadline to register is October 1.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 8:30 a.m. and return at 4:00 p.m.

     

    Lexington Carriage Tour - $28

    W, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Lexington, VA

    Discover Lexington’s unique history and experience the town while riding around the streets in a comfortable horse drawn carriage. You will also have time to explore the shops and boutiques in the historic district. Lunch is on your own in downtown Lexington. The deadline to register is October 6.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 9 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.

     

    Shred-a-thon – FREE

    Tu, Oct. 19, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center

    Shredding sensitive documents is one way to reduce your risk of becoming an identity theft victim. If you are planning to come to this event, please adhere to the following:

    • Walk-ups are not allowed. This is a drive thru event.
    • Do not bring items that can jam or damage the shredder, such as metal, plastic bags, three-ring binders, composition notebooks, hanging file folders, paint brushes, padlocks, hardback books, keys, eyeglasses, bungee cords, etc.
    • Bring your documents in a box or plastic tote no larger than 22.5x18x11.5 inches, limit of three per vehicle.

    Blue Ridge Parkway - $15

    W, Oct. 20, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Blue Ridge Parkway

    Enjoy a leisurely ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway and take in the autumn splendor. We will visit Mabry Mill, the Parkway’s most photographed site, and explore other popular sites along the way including the Poor Farmer's Market and Nancy’s Fudge Shop. Lunch is on your own at a mystery restaurant. The deadline to register is October 13.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 9 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.

     

    Drift and Dine on the New - $25

    Th, Oct. 21, 1 p.m. - 8 p.m., New River

    Enjoy a relaxing raft float with class I and II rapids. All equipment is provided, including dry bags, personal flotation devices, paddles, and paddling jackets. Afterwards we will dine at the Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston, a local hotspot for contemporary Appalachian cuisine and entertainment. The meal fee is on your own. The deadline to register is October 14.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 1 p.m. and return at 8 p.m.

     

    Halloween Bingo - $5

    F, Oct. 22, 11:00 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Senior Activities Room

    Join us for bingo, refreshments, and fun with your friends! Bring $1 in quarters for bingo prizes. The deadline to register is October 15.

     

    Trunk or Treat at Meadowbrook Library – FREE

    Sa, Oct. 23, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Meadowbrook Library

    Come dressed in your favorite Halloween costume for Trunk or Treat! This event is held in the parking lot at Meadowbrook Library in Shawsville. For additional information, contact Meadowbrook Library at (540) 268-1964.

     

    Frankenstein - $58

    Th, Oct. 28, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Barter Theatre - Abingdon, VA

    When scientist Victor Frankenstein infuses the spark of life into his creature, he begins a haunting examination of what it is to be human and the price we pay for playing God. A uniquely theatrical experience, this new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous story is the perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season at the Barter Theatre. Lunch is on your own at a local restaurant that will be determined closer to the event date. The deadline to register is September 27.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 9 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m.

     

    Pumpkin Decorating - $10

    F, Oct. 29, 11:00 a.m., Mid County Activity Center

    Join us for a fun afternoon of pumpkin decorating to celebrate the fall season. The price includes all supplies. The deadline to register is October 22.

     

    Steel Magnolias - $59

    W, Nov. 3, 11 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Wohlfahrt Haus

    Join us for a trip to Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre for the production of Steel Magnolias. Pivoting around the lively Truvy Jones’s Louisiana beauty parlour, a tightly-knit band of friends confront griefs, loss, life’s unforeseen tragedies, and heartaches with what they do best: gossiping and sharing. Lunch is included and served prior to production. The deadline to register is October 17.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 11 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m.

     

    Pop Up Card Craft - $15

    Instructor Beverly Bridges will teach you how to make cards that pop up with a special design when opened. Delight your friends and family with these creative, handmade cards. The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is November 2.

     

    Paint n' Fun Ceramic Christmas Tree - $56

    Part 1 – W, Nov. 10         Part 2 – M, Nov. 15

    1 p.m. - 4 p.m., Paint n' Fun - Uptown Christiansburg, 782 New River Road NW

    Create a beautiful 13" ceramic Christmas tree to enjoy for the holidays. We will paint the tree in Part 1 and add lights in Part 2. We will also paint a mystery Christmas ornament in Part 2. The deadline to register is November 1.

     

    Dutch Oven Cooking - $17

    W, Nov. 17, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Claytor Lake State Park

    Enjoy an afternoon at Claytor Lake State Park for a relaxing outdoor cooked meal using traditional Dutch ovens and open flame. Take a stroll along the water or trails while the food is prepared. You can even drop a line in the water from the dock just below the cooking shelter. The deadline to register is November 10.

    Bottle Cap Christmas Wreath - $5

    Upcycle metal bottle caps and old Christmas cards into a festive Christmas wreath to hang on your door or give as a gift. The fee includes all supplies. The deadline to register is November 22.

     

    Millmont Greenhouse - $15

    Tu, Nov. 30, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Stuart’s Draft, VA

    Get ready for the holidays with the wonderful selection of poinsettias available at Millmont Greenhouse! Decorate your home or give them as a gift. We will also stop by The Cheese Shop, where you can stock the pantry with high quality and unique cheeses, snacks, gluten-free products, jams, jellies, old-fashioned candy, hard-to-find baking ingredients. Lunch is on your own at the Cheese Shop Deli. The deadline to register is November 23.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 9 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.

     

    Holiday Gift Mixes - $5

    W, Dec. 1, 1:00 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Senior Activities Room

    Create gift mixes that you can give for Christmas, birthdays, appreciation, and just because! Participants will make four different gift mixes. The fee includes all supplies, and the deadline to register is November 23.

     

    Holiday High Tea - $20

    Tu, Dec. 7, 12:30 p.m., Palisades Restaurant

    Get in the festive spirit at the Palisades Restaurant’s annual Holiday High Tea. Enjoy a four-course high tea featuring tasty pastries, scones, cookies, and finger sandwiches while sipping on delicious tea. All costs are included in the fee. The deadline to register is November 29.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 12:30 p.m.

     

    Christmas in the Mountains - $65

    W, Dec. 8, 11 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Wohlfahrt Haus

    Enjoy songs old and new in this magical Christmas story set at the Kringle Lodge. The Wohlfahrt Haus cast will dazzle as they pull out all the stops to keep Santa and Christmas on the calendar. Enjoy a delicious holiday feast prior to the production, included in the fee. The deadline to register is November 19.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 11 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m.

     

    Mystery Cooking Program - $5

    F, Dec. 10, 11:00 a.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Senior Activities Room

    The fee includes all supplies, and the deadline to register is December 2.

     

    Ugly Sweater Bingo - $8

    M, Dec. 13, 12:30 p.m., Christiansburg Recreation Center, Senior Activities Room

    Dress up in your favorite ugly Christmas sweater and accessories! A prize will be awarded to the best ugly sweater. Enjoy bingo, prizes, and Christmas-inspired refreshments. The fee includes snacks and prizes. The deadline to register is December 6.

     

    Christmas Elves Craft - $15

    Tu, Dec. 14, 11:00 a.m., Mid County Activity Center

    Learn how to use mini flower pots to create little elf decorations with instructor Beverly Bridges. The fee includes all supplies, and the deadline to register is December 7.

     

    Christmas Movie and Cookie Decorating - $12

    F, Dec. 17, 1:00 p.m., Montgomery County Government Center

    Enjoy an afternoon of festive cookie decorating and a mystery Christmas movie! The fee includes snacks and all supplies. Just bring yourself and a sweet tooth! The deadline to register is December 10.

     

    A Christmas Story - $55

    W, Dec. 22, 12 p.m. – 7 p.m., Mill Mountain Theatre

    Join us for a trip to Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke! Before the show, we will stop for some last minute Christmas shopping and have lunch at Hollywood’s Restaurant and Bakery. Lunch is on your own. The deadline to register is December 3.

    We will depart from the Montgomery County Government Center at 8:30 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.

    Senior Lock Box Program

    This program is available for older adults and provides emergency first responders a way to quickly gain access into the participant's home during an emergency. This program is sponsored by the Christiansburg/Montgomery TRIAD S.A.L.T. Council and Christiansburg Police Department. For more information, contact David Wall, Crime Prevention Specialist at (540) 382-3131.

     

    Policies

    Deadlines: A deadline is set to secure tickets. If the minimum number of participants is not met, an activity will be canceled.

    Refunds: For a full refund, cancellations must be made prior to the registration deadline. An exception can be made only if a substitute is provided or the vacancy can be filled from the Wait List. Refunds are automatic if an activity is cancelled. 

    Medicine: Participants must travel with at least a 24-hour supply of medication in the event of a return delay due to inclement weather or other circumstance.

    Inclement Weather: If Montgomery County Schools are cancelled or on a 2+ hour delay, programs will be cancelled.

    Wait List: If an activity is full at the time of inquiry, you can request to be placed on the waiting list. If a vacancy becomes available, participants will be notified and given seven days to submit the fee.

     

    We reserve the right to have program flexibility.
