Montgomery County Redistricting Information

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a public hearing regarding the proposed district maps on March 14, 2022. Redistricting plans will be effective after the June 2022 Primary.

Following every Census, redistricting takes place to accommodate population changes in our community. As a result, new district maps are being proposed for Montgomery County.

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a public hearing regarding the proposed district maps on March 14, 2022, at 7:15 p.m., at the Montgomery County Government Center located at 755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg, Va.

Following the March 14, public hearing, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to adopt the proposed district maps, to include the proposed polling places.

Redistricting plans will be effective after the June 2022 Primary.

Why do we need to have redistricting? What are the rules?

  • Following the Census, redistricting often occurs to make sure there is equal voter representation in each voting district.
  • Each Board district must be within 5% of a predetermined ideal target.
  • All boundaries must be distinguishable by physical features observable on the ground (i.e. roads, water features, power lines).
  • Precinct populations: no precinct may have more than 5,000 registered voters (this differs from total population count).
  • Polling places must be located in the precinct or within 1 mile of the precinct which they serve.
  • The legal mandate by the Commonwealth states there shall be no split precincts. Entire precincts must fit inside the same Congressional, VA Senate, House of Delegates, and Supervisor Districts (i.e. all voters at same poll have the same ballot style).
