Long-Time Fire and Rescue Volunteers Recognized

Last year, the volunteer fire departments responded to 2,417 calls and the volunteer rescue squads responded to 9,643 calls. In total, 529 individuals dedicate their time to serve as volunteer as fire fighters and rescue squad members in Montgomery County.


2021 Fire and Rescue Service Awards Ceremony On August 23, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors recognized the County's Fire and Rescue Volunteers with 20 or more years of service.

Those recognized included:
14 members of the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department:
  • Stephen C. Ayers, 50 years;
  • Fred T. Linkous, 50 years;
  • Alfred A. Smith, 50 years;
  • M. Wayne Myers, Jr., 45 years;
  • Norman D. Croy, 40 years; 
  • Dennis D. Fisher, 40 years;
  • Werner F. Van Damme, 40 years;
  • Randal K. Smith, 35 years; 
  • Daryl W. Linkous, 30 years; 
  • Mark Smith, 25 years; 
  • Brian K. Price, 23, years;
  • Perry L. Morehead, Jr., 21 years;
  • D. Matthew McCoy, 20 years; and 
  • Neil W. Sedlak, 20 years; 
four members of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad:
  • Mike Kirk, 35 years;

two members of the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department:

one member of the Christiansburg Volunteer Rescue Squad:

six members of the Longshop McCoy Volunteer Fire and Rescue:
  • Larry Akers, 25 years;

  • Rebecca Shelor, 22 years;

one member of the Shawsville Rescue Squad:

four members of the Riner Volunteer Fire Department:
  • Travis Simpkins, 40 years;
