Dog license (tags)

Dog licenses (tags) go on sale Nov. 1 and must be purchased by Jan. 31 each year at the Treasurer's office or the Blacksburg Municipal Building.

Dogs and domesticated cats must be vaccinated for rabies by four months of age by a licensed veterinarian. A copy of the vaccination certification, signed by the veterinarian, including the veterinarian's license number, must be presented when purchasing a dog tag. The certification of vaccination must be marked spayed or neutered in order to purchase an unsexed tag. If you are purchasing a kennel tag you must present the certifications of vaccination for all dogs kept in the kennel.

Dog tag fees, effective April 1, 2018
  • Male - $10
  • Female - $10
  • Unsexed (spayed or neutered) - $5
  • 20-dog kennel tag - $50


Beginning on November 1, 2020 Montgomery County will issue a lifetime animal license for individual dogs four (4) months or older.

How do I get a lifetime dog license?

Present dog’s original valid rabies vaccination certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian (required one time only) to purchase lifetime tag for $25 at:

Individual lifetime tag will be valid as long as rabies vaccination is up-to-date.

20-dog kennel tag

$50 annually, an original valid rabies certificate for each dog in the kennel is required to be presented at time of purchase.
